The Georgia Jacobson Memorial Foundation was formed by family and friends to honor the memory of a very courageous woman. Although Georgia's battle began with breast cancer in 2004, it was the lengthy leukemia treatments she began in June, 2006 that motivated her to help ease some of the financial burden for other leukemia patients and their families. At Georgia's request this foundation was established immediately upon her death in 2007. (See
Georgia's Story)
Because Georgia spent the majority of her last year of life at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, this Foundation aligns itself particularly with those patients receiving treatment there on the eighth floor cancer ward. A diagnosis of leukemia often requires numerous chemotherapy treatments, bone marrow transplants, and other treatments which result in frequent and sometimes very lengthy hospital stays. Additional housing costs can be devastating during this trying time.
It is the mission of The Georgia Jacobson Foundation to provide housing assistance to eligible patients. Early in Georgia's treatment she became acquainted with another very special woman named Donna Zobel. This Foundation was inspired by Donna's generous donation of the use of her Ann Arbor apartment during Georgia's year-long leukemia battle. Our hope is to help the patient and family focus more on each other rather than their housing needs. Our mission will be accomplished if the patient's financial stresses are reduced, thereby allowing all mental energy to be directed toward healing.
